IMPORTANT UPDATE: APRIL 7TH, 2017 EXPO CANCELED
We regret to inform you that this year's Appstate STEAM Expo is canceled.
This was not a decision that Tracey and I took lightly. However, a large number of the students coming to the Expo had already informed us that they were probably not going to attend due to the forecast. We were also concerned about the safety and liability issues with the children.
NC Science Festival Mission
The North Carolina Science Festival is a multi-day celebration showcasing science and technology. The Festival highlights the educational, cultural and financial impact of science in our state. Through hands-on activities, science talks, lab tours, nature experiences, exhibits and performances, the Festival engages a wide range of public audiences while inspiring future generations.

Appstate’s participation in the NC Science Festival
Appalachian State University is proud to host multiple official NC Science Festival events each year. These events spark interest and excitement in STEM fields that last all year.
Our signature event is the ASU STEAM Expo (STEAM = Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics). The Expo is held annually in the Holmes Convocation Center on Appstate’s main campus in Boone, NC. The main Expo floor is an open house with exciting, hands-on booths representing astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, health sciences, physics, psychology and much, much more! We also have science demo shows, hands-on learning events, and tours of our research facilities available for booking on Expo day.
Other Appstate NC Science Festival events include astronomy open houses at ASU’s Dark Sky Observatory and Rankin Astronomical Observatory, chemistry and physics demo shows, the annual SumoBot competition with Lego robot wars, and fascinating, free talks on STEM topics hosted by the Math and Science Education Center and the Psychology Department.
